Open Books Press Release, March 24, 2014
Yu Jie's New Book, China's Godfather, Xi Jinping, Published in Hong Kong
China's Godfather, Xi Jinping, totaling 448 pages, was published in Hong Kong on March 24, 2014, and is available in all major Hong Kong bookstores. The book was originally to be published by Mr. Yiu Mantin's (Yao Wentian) Morning Bell Press. However, publication of the book was suspended after Mr. Yiu was deprived of his freedom in Shenzhen in October 2013. Yu Jie continued to revise the book and asked Open Books to complete the editing.
China's Godfather, Xi Jinping is the final volume in Yu Jie's Dictator Trilogy. Publication of the first two volumes, China's Best Actor, Wen Jiabao, in 2010, and King of Harmony, Hu Jintao, in 2012, attracted widespread attention and controversy, with the Wen Jiabao volume attaining record sales. This latest volume in the trilogy has attracted international interest because of its focus on the highly centralized power of China's current leader, Xi Jinping. Leading scholars such as Joseph Cheng, Xia Ming and Benny Tai Yiu-ting have written forewords for the book, pointing out the profound insights Yu Jie provides into Xi Jinping's values, character, and governance style.
Yu Jie is one of the most powerful and influential writers of China's 1970s generation. A graduate of Peking University, Yu rose to fame in 1998 with the publication of his essay collection Fire and Ice. He has since published more than 40 books, including Vanilla Hill and Fault Lines, a biography of Liu Xiaobo. After experiencing repeated house arrest and torture, Yu Jie left China in 2012 and now lives in the United States, where he makes his living as a writer and commentator, and carries out research on freedom of religion and civil society.
