Follow-up report on "Li Nanyang sued the Customs" (108)

——Unswerving Response

The 25th "Notice of Trial Continuing" was issued by the Beijing Third Intermediate Court on February 28 this year. So far, I heard no words from the judge. This month, I re-read my father's letters that he wrote to us at the time not long after we arrived in the United States, which brought me so much lament and thought. In the letter dated March 20, 1994, he wrote:

At present, the system in many aspects of our country is not yet adequate. I think it will take at least 10 years to straighten out a real market economy (this year, a national bond was issued to make up for the fiscal deficit). Corruption is so rampant, because the existing system is fundamentally wrong (such as dual control on pricing and taxation, multiple channels on foreign trade, etc., and loopholes are everywhere, privileges are obtained easily by the rich and power. It is not easy to build a society that is truly equal, democratic, and free to compete in politics, economy, job, personnel, and other aspects, and not to mention it is very hard for many people to break nepotism. In the Western, public opinion is the fourth force to balance powers, but we have a monopoly on setting up a criterion on what people can say and cannot say, while the media can be bought to report so called NEWS. It is still unclear how to resolve the dead knot of conflict between current economics and politics. I am optimistic because eventually the economy will determine a political system. Although the road is long, this is a unique phenomenon of China. We Chinese should be patient and take the change step by step. The difference between Revolution and Evolution is one letter only, the latter is better. As long as the economy continues to develop, other fields will slowly catch up (it's impossible not to follow), no more chaos (economics and politics) and no moving backwards again, and truly develops our distinguished way (neither "socialist" nor capitalist), our nation and country will still have hope. I've talked so much, as I hope that you will "be in America and have a heart in China" and do things useful for our nation and country, which has gone through such hardship. I don't know how many more years I am going to live, and I am sorting out what I have experienced in the past and leaving it to future generations to learn from, which is what I can only do now. I am powerless to make any impact in the direction that our country shall go. I have been obsessed with looking back, sitting at my desk all day long tirelessly, the only reason for doing so is to provide a mirror for people to avoid mistakes and make wise choices. That is just a little wish I have.

This passage from my father brought me to tears. What he could and did do for his nation and country that has been suffering so much, in the last leg of his lifetime journey was to leave his memoir. But his last humble wish is unacceptable to the son of his close friend Xi Zhongxun. Not only is the book Li Rui Oral History being banned forever, but also Xi wants to loot back all the materials that Li Rui donated to the Hoover Institution in the United State and destroy them all.

In the letter, my father said that he was optimistic about China's future because the economy determines politics and as long as the economy continues to develop...our nation and country still have hope. But what happened in China, and what happened in the world after China entered the WTO, all prove his belief was wrong. Economics does not determine politics, on the contrary, it is conditioned by politics. Since the CCP seized power, whether it was the Mao era or after the so-called Reform and Opening up to today, China's economic lifeline has always been firmly controlled by the hands of the Communist Party. After China entered the WTO, the political dirty water of the CCP has muddied the clear water of the West. Now not only is China's road getting darker and darker, but the United States is also slipping into hell under the erosion of the CCP. Whether it can be pulled back is big question mark.

In his letter, my father also said: "In the West, public opinion is the fourth force to balance powers." Thirty years later, the reality in the United States is far from what he had believed in back then, and the balancing force of public opinion is like a frail sick man. Voices that do not conform to the interests of the ruling party, the Democratic Party, are suppressed and blocked, even Robert Kennedy Jr., the party's presidential candidate, will not be spared.

On May 30, 1995, after learning that my husband had obtained an MBA degree, my father wrote us:

I was very happy to receive the 5.15 letter. Tizhong has put an MBA hat on, and I hope you will find a job that is satisfying and can fully fulfill  your potential. Business Management is a good field. My love for China is much stronger than yours. I always hope that one day you all will return to China and work here. By the beginning of the 21st century, the situation in China must be better with more democracy. It is impossible to separate economics from politics. Based on my health, I feel confident that I will live through the early years of the 21st century. I still want to realize this dream (of seeing a better China).

Twenty-three years have passed in the 21st century, and my father's dream has not come true, and China is a country I can never go back to, where the prison is waiting for me. I thought I followed my father's wishes doing the things that will do good for China. But in the eyes of Xi Jinping, they are all challenges to his power and undermine his rule. At the Lushan Meeting in 1959, what my father got from his utter loyalty to the party and the country was 20 years of Chinese Gulag camp and Qincheng jail, but he still looked forward to the future of China optimistically. I am pessimistic, and I do not believe I would have my court date for suing Beijing Airport Customs in my lifetime. But I will always remember my father's words: although the road is long, this is a unique phenomenon of China. I should be patient and take the change step by step. I am waiting for the 26th "Continuing Notice" from the Beijing Third Intermediate Court in August, I will continue to respond with my unswerving "Follow-Up Report".
