OUR APPEAL
(February 10, 2012)
Dear respectful President Obama & State Secretary Clinton:
Recently, after China vetoed the UN resolution on Syria, the U.S. Secretary of State Ms. Hillary Clinton severely criticized China’s act as travesty. We highly appreciate this clear-cut justice-upholding stand of the U.S. government expressed by the State Secretary.
The veto by China is not accidental. It is inseparable with the regime’s consistent negative attitude towards such universal values as democracy, freedom and human rights. China’s escalating crackdown on political and religious dissent and its cyber-policing on the Internet with an intention to keep its people in ignorance are known to all. Now we have to bring to your attention a recent event relating to a U.S. citizen kidnapped by China’s security personnel in Beijing.
According to press reports, a Chinese American citizen Mr. George Ge arrived in Beijing on January 28 this year for his mother’s funeral, after which, on February 1, he went to visit a retired professor Ms. Ding Ziling, whose only son was killed during the Tiananmen massacre 23 years ago. Just before his arrival at the ground floor of Prof. Ding’s residence building, Mr. Ge was intercepted and assaulted by several plainclothes from the State Security Bureau. The thugs grabbed Ge’s cell-phone and kidnapped him to a place, where they detained him. They brutally beat and insulted him while carrying on their interrogation, and they deleted all the photos from Ge’s computer. After 21 hours of inhumane treatment, they finally took him to the airport and drove him out of China on February 2 despite of his original itinerary.
Their utter disregard of the international law and infringement upon the human rights of a foreigner tell of the Chinese regime’s haughtiness. It can disregard a foreigner’s human rights within its own territory today, it can undoubtedly do whatever it likes anywhere in the world tomorrow. This is a sign that the Chinese Communist regime is turning into a fascist one. People cannot but worry about the future of the world: Will there be a repetition of history wherein the brutal rule of Hitler brought untold sufferings onto peace-loving people?
Fortunately the U.S. stand declared by Secretary of State Ms. Clinton is comforting. We can expect that the United States of America, a strong bastion of democracy and freedom, will never follow the foot-steps of the appeasement policy mistake made by the former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and will never let new fascism prevail unchecked.
China’s vice-president Xi Jinping will soon visit the United States. We earnestly request that the U.S. government take this opportunity to not only lodge a protest with him against the inhumane treatment towards Mr. George Ge, but also, more importantly, explicitly stress to him the sure negative impact on US-China relationship resulted from China’s deteriorating human rights situation.
Thank you very much for spending your precious time to read our appeal.
Respectfully yours,
A Group of U.S. Citizens and Overseas Chinese
